FootballScoop recently named JB Brown, who joined the Michigan staff in 2021 as a special teams analyst, in its second-ever minority watch list. The publication received submissions for roughly 400 coaches and football personnel prior to the rising star selections being finalized.

Brown is an Alvin, Texas native and the son of a Texas high school football coach. The former second baseman was a two-time all-conference selection at the University of Pacific and a 14th round MLB draft pick in 2010 (New York Mets). He went on to play for the Brooklyn Cyclones, St. Lucie Mets and Savannah Sand Gnats in the minor leagues.

Brown’s football coaching journey started at Pacific as an undergraduate assistant coach before soon moving to the Power Five for the first time at Kansas (2015-16). He served the Jayhawks as a graduate assistant for special teams, linebackers, running backs and recruiting. Brown spent the following two seasons (2017-18) at Houston where he continued special teams responsibilities along with assisting the secondary. In 2019, he was hired as Texas Southern’s special teams coordinator – the gig which ultimately led Brown to the Wolverines.

How were the 2022 Minority Watch List/Rising Star selections made?

Via FootballScoop: “With input from double-digit NFL coaches and scouts, more than 100 college coaches and staffers, as well as myriad other figures in football, not to mention devoted wives and family members, journalists, our staff here at FootballScoop and a panel of experts who helped vet candidates and wade through the both difficult and incredibly rewarding selection process, FootballScoop presents its 2022 Minority Watch List/Rising Stars compilation.”

“In the end, some 125 football professionals gained selection to our 2022 iteration and roughly 250 coaches and personnel garnered FootballScoop 2022 Minority Watch List/Rising Star Honorable Mention.”
