For the first time in 20 years, the Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball program will honor a program legend by raising his number into the rafters. This time, it will be the No. 3 of legendary point guard Trey Burke.

Michigan announced on Friday afternoon that Burke’s number would be honored at Crisler Center on Friday, Jan. 23, against the Ohio State Buckeyes. The rivalry tilt is an appropriate stage given Burke is a Columbus, Ohio native.

Five jerseys hang in the Crisler Center rafters. Only one of them – Cazzie Russell’s No. 33 – is officially retired by the program. The others include Bill Buntin (No. 22), Phil Hubbard (No. 35), Glen Rice (No. 41) and Rudy Tomjanovich (No. 45).

This season, junior point guard Elliot Cadeau will don the No. 3 uniform for the Wolverines.

Burke’s number being honored has been in the works for some time, stating back in the spring that he had heard Michigan would eventually be commemorating it.

“I was told not to say anything, but yes. I’m sure they aren’t going to be upset when they see … I’m glad you asked it, because I wasn’t gonna say anything,” Burke said on the Politely RAW podcast when asked if he’s had communication with Michigan about his jersey being honored. “I have heard that it will happen. It will happen. Bucket list for me. I appreciate everything that university … I appreciate them, they appreciate everything they did for me and my family as well, though.”

Burke was the consensus national player of the year in 2013, winning the Wooden, Naismith AP and Oscar Robertson awards. He was a consensus first-team All-American and named the Big Ten Player of the Year.

Burke appeared in 73 games with 72 starts over his two-year career at Michigan, averaging 16.9 points and 5.7 assists per outing. He declared for the 2013 NBA Draft and picked No. 9 overall by the Utah Jazz. Burke last played in the NBA in 2022 and current plays for Leones de Ponce in Puerto Rico, part of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional league (BSN).
