Dusty May To Embrace Nil Landscape & Thoughts On Who Will Fill Out The Rest Of His Coaching Staff

Oakland forward Trey Townsend has declared for the 2024 NBA Draft and entered the NCAA transfer portal, and Michigan Wolverines basketball head coach Dusty May “has interest” in his services, according to a report from The Detroit Free Press.

The 6-foot-6, 228-pounder played four seasons for head coach Greg Kampe with the Grizzlies, who reside in Rochester, Mich., and possesses one year of eligibility remaining. He’s reportedly leaving the option open to return to Oakland for his final year. Michigan State also has interest in him, and more suitors will be in the mix.

The 2023-24 Horizon League Player of the Year led his team to a 24-12 season that included a conference tournament championship and NCAA Tournament berth. The No. 14 seed became one of the top stories of the tournament’s first weekend by upsetting No. 3 seed Kentucky, 80-76, in Pittsburgh. Townsend scored 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in the victory, before exploding for 30 points and 13 boards in a 79-73 overtime loss to North Carolina State in the second round.

Townsend led Oakland in points (17.3), rebounds (8.1) and assists (3.1) per game last season. He shot 46 percent on twos (208-of-452), 37.5 percent on threes (12-of-32) and 77.9 percent on free throws (169-of-217).

The Michigan transfer target scored most of his points at the rim, where he converted on 55.9 percent of his shots. He produced 0.922 points per post-up possession (including passes) and 1.121 on cuts. He also drew 5.1 fouls per 40 minutes, ranking 179th in the country.

While he does much of his work on the interior, Townsend can stretch the floor, grading out in the 45th percentile in the country with a 48.2 effective field goal percentage on catch-and-shoot jumpers.

Townsend has started all 129 of his career games in college, totaling 4,501 minutes and averaging 34.9 minutes per game. He averaged 16.5 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists per clash in 2022-23, earning second-team All-Horizon League honors. The Michigan target posted 13.3 points, 5.6 boards and 1.7 assists per outing in 2021-22, after putting up 8.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per tilt as a freshman in 2020-21.

An unranked recruit in the 2020 class, Townsend played high school basketball at Oxford (Mich.) High, where he broke the school’s single-season scoring record with 456 points as a senior. He also competed in high jump for his track and field team. Both of his parents, Nicole and Skip, played basketball at Oakland. His brother, Zach, is on the Grizzlies’ soccer team.
