But the game continued to go back and forth, with UNLV freshman guard Keson Gilbert making a jumper and junior forward Donovan Williams laying it in to tie the game at 15-15 before the media break at 11:18.

Michigan went on a 6-0 run from there. Diabate scored on two straight jump hooks, before freshman guard Kobe Bufkin was fouled on a layup and hit both free throws to give the Wolverines a 21-15 edge with 9:02 to go. Hamm went to the bench with his second foul.

The Maize and Blue opened up their largest lead to that point, 28-20 at the 6:28 mark after a 5-0 run fueled by a Jones triple and a Diabate layup. UNLV senior guard Jordan McCabe hit a three in transition to cut it within five, 28-23 with 5:48 to go, before Michigan head man Juwan Howard called timeout. The Runnin’ Rebels hit 12 of their first 20 attempts from the field (60 percent).

After some back-and-forth play, Hamilton tied it at 40-40 with a step-back two along the baseline, before Houstan hit a three and Johns had a layup off a cut to bring it to 45-40 at 16:30.

Michigan held a 49-45 edge at the media timeout with 13:55 to play, following a dunk by Dickinson that put him in double figures.

Brooks made his fourth triple of the night at the 6:27 mark, but Williams hit a rebuttal triple to make it 63-54 with just over six minutes to play. After forcing a turnover, Williams hit a long two to pull the Runnin’ Rebels within seven.

Hamm made one of two free throws to cut it to 63-57 with 4:26 to play.
