Key quotes from Michigan players Damon Payne, Zack Marshall

Michigan DT Damon Payne
• On what stood out to the Michigan players and coaches from the film of the 31-13 loss to USC: “Just the little things. Really discipline within the game, doing the small things right. When things get difficult, falling back on your training, is just what I’ve seen from the tape.”

• On what the message from defensive coordinator Wink Martindale was following the USC loss: “Basically, what type of man are you going to be? How are you going to respond? Are you going to let this moment affect the next weeks you got, or are you going to just move on?

“I think it was received great. Coming from practice today, a new energy, good bounce back. Just ready to attack the week.”

• On the overall mood of the Michigan team: “We try our best to move on after games, win or loss, and just get better, week by week.”

• On what stands out about Washington offense: “What stands out to me personally, I’ve seen a lot of aggressiveness out of them, a lot of athleticism and just a great matchup for this week.”

Michigan TE Zack Marshall
• On why today’s practice was ‘great’: “19 [freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood] is really good at football, and we executed things pretty well, so can’t complain. But we know that it’s a bounce back week, so that’s what we’re going to do.”

• On the emphasis of keeping the same energy, win or loss, and acting the same no matter the result: “100 percent. The message in the building is the same, right? We work hard, we’re going to outwork you. Sometimes, they’re going to be in the better coverage against our plays, and at the end of the day, you have a play sheet and sometimes your play sheet loses to their play sheet. It’s not by a lack of preparation of anything. I can talk to the analyst that’s going to leave here at 2 a.m. tonight. Everyone’s going to be working hard to fix things. So, yeah, you attack every week with the same emphasis, but sometimes you lose. That’s how it works.”

• On if the mood is ‘up’ in the Michigan building: “No. Up, down … it’s definitely like a camera focus. Sometimes, you’re in the wrong focus. Not that it doesn’t make a great photo, like sometimes blurry photos are cool, but sometimes you’ve got to dial it back in and get it to the crisp, Sony X whatever, the nice camera, get back to that really nice, dialed in look.”
