Newsstand: Former Michigan QB expected to be starter at new school

Tweets Of The Day
Former Michigan quarterback Jayden Denegal, who transferred out of the program in December, is expected to be named the starting quarterback at San Diego State, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. Denegal spent three seasons with the Wolverines from 2022-24, but left after being a deep reserve on a team that struggled at the position all season long in 2024. Denegal entered the portal Dec. 9.
A transfer from Michigan, Denegal beat out Central Michigan transfer Bert Emmanuel Jr.
Denegal spent the past three years in Ann Arbor and played seven games during that span. This will be the first time in his college career that he has been a starting quarterback.
Denegal played high school football at Apple Valley (CA), where he was a three-star recruit in the 2022 cycle. He ranked as the No. 489 overall player and No. 27 quarterback according to the On3 | Rivals Industry Ranking, an equally weighted average that utilizes all three major recruiting services.
With five-star freshman Bryce Underwood and transfers Mikey Keene and Jake Garcia entering the mix for Michigan this offseason, Denegal figured the best move for his career was a change of scenery. It certainly worked out for him and he’ll have Wolverines fans cheering him on from afar this year.
Michigan, on the other hand, is still in an ongoing competition to figure out its starting quarterback. Coach Sherrone Moore revealed recently that he plans to announce a starter during game week of the team’s season opener against New Mexico on Aug. 30.
Legendary former Michigan quarterback Tom Brady said Bo Schembechler’s ‘The Team, The Team, The Team’ mantra stuck with him throughout the rest of his football career, long after he left Ann Arbor.

Quote Of The Day
“I would need a good season from Bryce Underwood to include the break glass in case of an emergency situation where his legs get you outta trouble. Because that’s the beautiful part about Bryce Underwood. He was able to do whatever he wanted at the high school level. He’s the best athlete on the field. His arm is a bazooka. He could fit into tight windows. There’s not a lot that Bryce Underwood had to stay away from doing at the high school level, I have to believe.”
