Wolverines in the NFL: Aidan Hutchinson big performance, Blake Corum rising, Will Johnson injured

Former Michigan Wolverines football defensive end Aidan Hutchinson notched his first sack of the season and since his broken leg last October in a week two win over the Chicago Bears. The fourth-year professional followed that up with a monster performance in a 38-30 win over the Baltimore Ravens Monday night.
Hutchinson had a big forced fumble on Baltimore running back Derrick Henry midway through the fourth quarter, with the Lions leading only 28-24 at the time. Detroit didn’t cash in with a touchdown off of the forced turnover but did put points on the board with a field goal.
He added 2 tackles, a tackle for loss, 1 sack and 9 pressures with a quarterback hit. He led a Lions pass rush that was dominant in corralling quarterback Lamar Jackson, one of the league’s most electric players.
“We didn’t even start out that hot with the sacks; it was something that just kept picking up steam as we went,” Hutchinson said.
Former Michigan running back Blake Corum didn’t see his team win, meanwhile, falling 33-26 to the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, but he had another productive game, rushing 8 times for 53 yards with a 12-yard long. He averaged 6.6 yards per carry, compared to 4.7 (20 rushes, 94 yards) from starting running back Kyren Williams.
Corum is becoming a factor in fantasy football leagues, with Yahoo Sports fantasy analyst Justin Boone writing that the former Michigan back is a solid waiver wire pickup.
“Corum continued to be productive on his touches,” Boone wrote. “The 24-year-old has now put up 97 yards and a touchdown over the last two games and is coming on as a potential flex option, while also offering league-winning upside if Williams gets hurt.”
Former Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy missed his team’s 48-10 win over the Cincinnati Bengals with an ankle injury, and he’s slated to be out for more time. Journeyman Carson Wentz started in his place and was solid with 14 completions on 20 attempts for 173 yards and 2 touchdowns, but the defense, which forced 5 turnovers, was the story of the lopsided win.
Minnesota head coach Kevin O’Connell shared an update on McCarthy, who the Vikings will be cautious with even though it’s not a severe injury.
“What is accurate is the idea of, no matter how much I believe J.J. would go out there and tough it out — today, tomorrow — if we asked him to, at this point in a very young career, his mobility is one of his weapons that has clearly already shown to be a positive for him,” O’Connell said.
“We want to make sure he’s healthy and allow this to be something that we can put in the rear view mirror and continue on with where he’s at in his young career here. But, yeah, we’re going to take it a day at a time.
“He responded well to treatment early on. He’s out of the boot, and now it just becomes the phase of high-ankle kind of rehab that we’re going to hopefully be able to get him back up to speed pretty quickly.”
Former Michigan cornerback and Arizona Cardinals rookie Will Johnson is dealing with a minor injury, too, although it looks like it’s possible he’ll miss a second-straight game. He hurt his groin in week two, missed the week three contest and did not practice Monday, Sept. 22, heading into this Thursday’s matchup with the Seattle Seahawks.
Johnson was off to a strong start to the season, accumulating 4 tackles and 4 pass breakups in two tilts.
