Michigan injury updates: Rod Moore '85 percent,' Davis Warren 'ahead of schedule,' Mikey Keene 'coming along'

Michigan Wolverines football has key players working back from injuries, including graduate safety Rod Moore and graduate quarterbacks Mikey Keene and Davis Warren. Here’s the latest on their statuses with fall camp quickly approaching (July 29).
S Rod Moore
Moore tore his ACL in March 2024 and missed all of last season. He faced some setbacks in his recovery, including having to undergo a second surgery, but he’s getting healthier ahead of the 2025 campaign, his fifth as a Wolverine.
“It’s going pretty good,” Moore said of his recovery on The Wolverine Podcast at the Champions Circle Golf Classic. “I’m probably at about 85 percent — 80, 85 percent. Really, I’ll just know more based off of how camp goes when I’ll be back. Whether that’s the first, second or third game, we don’t know yet.
“It’s going pretty good right now. I’m doing everything — running, cutting, doing a couple of DB drills. It’s just all based on how this month goes.”
Michigan begins fall camp next week, and Moore is already participating in a lot of summer activities.
“Right now, it’s a little bit slower on the rehab side of things, because I’m kinda doing everything, but I have a return-to-play coach that I work with rather than with the group on running days,” the Michigan standout revealed. “I have to come in, stretch, whatever, getting my running in, and then do lifting after that. Either I go do rehab at the facility or I go somewhere else.”
The pain is starting to die down.
“I think I’m gonna have pain for a while; there are different types of pain,” Moore noted. “It’s more like soreness, just because I haven’t done a lot of stuff for about 15 months. That comes with it.”
QB Mikey Keene
Keene is a Fresno State transfer who joined Michigan’s team in January but suffered an upper body injury just before the start of spring practices. Head coach Sherrone Moore said after the spring game that Keene, who’s started 34 career games in college, was scheduled to start throwing again this summer. Keene said July 21 his progression is going well.
“Coming along just fine,” Keene said. “Excited to be able to get back out there with the guys. It was an unfortunate situation, but will be ready to go. Obviously, sucks not being able to get the reps and the camaraderie with the team, but just trying to do what I can to be the best teammate possible. I got closer with Davis in the offseason; we were together, rehab group going strong. We were on that road bike going a lot of miles.
“Excited to get back and going with the team. Summer has been good. We’re excited for the opportunity this year.”
Keene has enjoyed his experience at Michigan so far, even though he missed practices in the spring.
“We’ve got a really tight-knit group,” Keene said. “Coming in as a transfer is a little bit different, but having veteran guys like a Davis, who have been here for their whole career, telling you the lay of the land and all of those different things that go with that has been super cool. I’ve obviously been in college football a while, too, so I understand how it goes in the offseason and how it rolls around.

“Camp is coming around, and the season. I’m just in the flow of those things. Just excited to have a good final year and send us off with a bang.”
QB Davis Warren
Warren — the Wolverines’ starting quarterback the majority of the 2024 campaign — suffered a torn ACL in Michigan’s Dec. 31 ReliaQuest Bowl win over Alabama. While the typical nine-plus month recovery means he may not be available at the start of the season, Warren is getting healthier and healthier and expects to be back on the field this year.
“It’s been going great,” Warren said.” Obviously, it’s a long process. It definitely doesn’t happen overnight — you learn that pretty quickly. I’ve got a great team built around me of my surgeon and some guys out in Los Angeles, and then the guys here, Phil and the trainers and Coach [Justin] Tress and, honestly, Coach Zach and the strength staff have done a really good job.
“Definitely on a positive trajectory and getting better every day. It’s cool to see that, so we’ll see what happens, but we’re moving in the right direction.”
The timeline for Warren’s return to action at Michigan practices is still up in the air, but a clearer picture could come soon.
“Nothing set in stone yet,” Warren revealed. “Was just kinda doing some milestone marker testing and things out in LA, which all went well. Waiting to hear with that, so I think once we get some of those results, we’ll have a better idea. Hard to tell until then, but definitely ahead of schedule. Not just saying that because everyone says that. I mean that, and I’ve taken that to heart of trying to get back as fast as I can and just see what happens.
“Me and [offensive coordinator and quarterbacks] Coach [Chip] Lindsey have been having some good conversations, and I’ve been preparing like I am out there even though I’m not. And if that time comes where they’re gonna need me and I’m healthy, you know I’ll be ready to go and do truly whatever I can to make sure we get a win. I got no doubt about that. So, we’ll see what happens.”
