Back in 2015, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh said the Wolverines were going into “the submarine” to start fall camp.

“Just to let you know, we’re going into the submarine tomorrow, and you won’t see us for a while,” Harbaugh said at a press conference to open fall camp. “You won’t hear from us, or see us. We’re going to be working. We’re going to be in a bunker mentality until we decide we’re not, until we decide to come up to the surface.”

Michigan players and coaches this season have been tweeting ‘#ImLockedIn’ at the beginning of camp, and the program hasn’t held any media events this week despite starting practices Wednesday. They may or may not be in the ‘submarine,’ and Sayfie and Broome are here for it if it gives Michigan a chance to maximize its opportunity for improvement.

“I’m also a big fan of … there are some programs where it seems like our colleagues are in their respective team’s buildings every single day,” Broome said. “Don’t get me wrong — there’s value in that. Would I prefer that to kinda playing the waiting game? Absolutely, I would, because it’s good for business. But I think there’s also value in not coming out and saying anything or making any sort of statements until there’s something to be said.”

They also discussed the newly released roster and some of the biggest weight changes, plus graduate wide receiver Donaven McCulley earning the No. 1 jersey after a strong spring. Remember, McCulley wore No. 1 as a wide receiver at Indiana and likely wanted that same digit at Michigan but had to earn it.

Finally, Sayfie and Broome broke down Michigan’s biggest position battles and gave their predictions for who will win them coming out of fall camp, with the caveat that there’s still a lot of time between now and then. Those battles are at quarterback, running back, wide receiver, left tackle, right guard, nose tackle, nickel back and safety. There are others that the Michigan podcast hosts hit on.
