Michigan is a 27.5-point favorite over Central Michigan, according to BetMGM, and this is a get right spot for the Wolverines coming off last week’s 24-13 loss at Oklahoma. CMU, meanwhile, also comes in 1-1, having beaten San Jose State in the opener (as 14-point underdogs!) and losing last week at Pittsburgh, 45-17, despite that game being a one possession tilt late in the third quarter.

Michigan will be without head coach Sherrone Moore, who’s suspended the next two weeks, meaning associate head coach Biff Poggi will be in charge. However, the operation will remain the same, Moore said this week.

“I don’t think he’s going to have a whole lot of say in what goes on,” Balas opined. “Maybe, do we go for it on fourth and 2 or something like that? But I think Sherrone made it pretty clear, when he was talking about the operation not changing, that, OK, Chip’s in charge of the offense and Wink’s in charge of the defense — in fact, he even said that — J.B. Brown’s in charge of the special teams.

“So, what does that leave Biff Poggi in charge of? Just kind of making sure everything is running, I guess, and just kind of the figurehead, and the guy to talk to the officials and yell at the officials if things aren’t going well or maybe have a say if, are we going for it on fourth and 2 or whatever? Frankly, I’m looking forward to maybe a different approach, so maybe he’ll bring that, when it comes to those types of decisions and being a little bit more daring.

“He was really the confidant for [former Michigan coach] Jim Harbaugh, so having him in there, the kids seem to love him. It’s fine. To me, it’s whatever. And, hopefully, get through these next two games 2-0 and you get your head coach back.”

Michigan and CMU will kick off at 12:01 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network.
