The hosts began by discussing the matchup between Michigan and Maryland, which features two freshman starting quarterbacks in Bryce Underwood and Malik Washington.

“Michigan is 8-2,” Sayfie said. “Chance for the College Football Playoff. They’re calling this a playoff game. [Head coach Mike] Locksley said this week this is a play-on game for Maryland, because they need to win the next two to make a bowl game for the first time in a couple years, and they’re on a six-game losing streak right now, after winning their first four games. They’ve lost to Washington, Nebraska, UCLA, Indiana, Rutgers and then last weekend to Illinois, 24-6.

“So, playoff vs. play-on, Anthony.”

“I love coach brain so much,” Broome said. “They just come up with the wildest terms, or they think it’s clever.

“But, yeah, this is kind of a vintage Maryland team, in that they roared out to a 4-0 start, and then Big Ten play comes along, and their first win was against a Big Ten team against Wisconsin, but that program is a shell of itself right now.

“Since then, Maryland has not won a game, and needs to win this game to set up a win and in a bowl game contest for them next week, when they come to Detroit and play Michigan State at Ford Field. So, they need this one, and they’ll be desperate for it.

“This matchup is a fascinating two sides of the coin. These are the two youngest teams in the Big Ten, I think by a decent margin, too. Freshman quarterback on both sides of the matchup. Talent on both sides of the matchup.

“When you start a freshman quarterback, there is always the inherent expectation that there are going to be turnovers, there are going to be mistakes that probably cost you games, and there have been games this year that Malik Washington’s play has cost Maryland in.

“On the flip side of that, Bryce Underwood has made quite a bit of mistakes over these last couple weeks, finally, after really what had been a pretty clean start to his career, and Michigan has found ways to win most of their games. They’re 8-2 right now, the two games they lost are against two teams that probably are ahead of them in the pecking order, when it comes to the College Football Playoff.”
