Martindale said he’s amped for the middle of Michigan’s season, after a strong start with a 3-1 record and the lone blemish coming at Oklahoma.

“We’re excited about taking the next step and playing the next game, but first we have to have the best Wednesday / Thursday / whatever. When you’re old trying to keep up with these schedules, it’s tough,” Martindale joked.

“I’m excited about where we’re at right now. I just know that the way we practice, the way we compete, the competition at different position groups, that the end product is going to be fun to watch.”

Michigan captain Max Bredeson said this week that the team is like an airplane ready to take off. Martindale was asked if he agrees with that assessment.

“Yeah, I think that the standard that Sherrone [Moore] has established with the team itself, every day you’re looking to get better and coach better and play better. And if it’s not there, he lets you know.

“I do see us taking off, as far as ascending, but each game is different. Each team is different. So, it’s going to be a tough battle the entire year in the Big Ten.”

Michigan went on the road and lost at Oklahoma, and won at Nebraska in its next road game. Martindale was asked if he’s pleased with the growth between those two tests.

“Sure, because we won,” Martindale said with a laugh. “And the bottom line, at the end of the day, that’s what it comes down to — winning and losing. But, yeah, I thought we played very well. I thought that we showed some toughness and tenacity in getting after the quarterback the way we did at Nebraska, but like I said, that’s over with, and we’ve just got to get better every day — continue to get better every day.”

Michigan is back in action Saturday against Wisconsin, the program’s homecoming game. The Wolverines have a pivotal month of October, with USC, Washington and Michigan State all on the docket. Michigan is ranked No. 20 in the Associated Press poll this week, seeking a win in the first meeting with the Badgers since 2021.
