Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti confirmed publicly at Big Ten Media Days that he did send a letter to the NCAA Committee on Infractions that was read at Michigan’s hearing for its scouting allegations in early June. He did not reveal the contents of his letter, but much detail was reported on by ESPN earlier this week.

From ESPN’s Dan Wetzel:
Petitti has sent a letter to the NCAA Committee on Infractions arguing that Michigan deserved no further punishment in a case focusing on the actions of former staffer Connor Stalions.

The letter was read at an early June infractions committee hearing in Indianapolis, multiple sources told ESPN. The NCAA has charged Michigan with 11 rule violations, six of them Level 1, which is classified as the most serious. The committee has yet to hand down a ruling, but one is expected before the 2025 season. It does not have to follow or even consider Petitti’s opinion.

The Big Ten confirmed to ESPN that Petitti sent the letter and said he would have attended in person but was recovering at the time from hip replacement surgery. The NCAA and Michigan are prohibited from commenting on a pending case. Petitti declined comment through a league spokesperson.

At Petitti’s press conference, the commissioner came out in support of the 4-4-2-2-1-3 16-team College Football Playoff model, which would include four auto bids for the Big Ten and SEC. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey, at his league’s media days, came out in support of the 5+11 model, which doesn’t include auto bids except for the top five conference champions.

Wetzel posted on social media his exception to Petitti’s suggestion.

Wetzel continued by using Iowa as an example for last season.

Michigan basketball freshman guard Trey McKenney joined the ‘Defend The Block’ podcast with host Brian Boesch this week.

FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt is buying stock in Michigan ahead of the 2025 season.

Mineral (Va.) Louisa County five-star Michigan running back target Savion Hiter is the No. 12 player in the 2026 class, according to Rivals.

Quote Of The Day

“He’s a football player. Obviously, he’s a safety. But he’s versatile enough and intelligent enough to play multiple positions. We plan to utilize his skillset as much as possible, so he can be the biggest difference maker possible. We’re going to play him at the high safety, but we’ll play him in the nickel, bring him down into the box and just get him involved as much as possible. He can change the game in so many difference ways.”
