Dominic Zvada drills a 31-yard field goal as time expires to put Michigan on top, 24-22, over Northwestern. The Wolverines move on to 8-2 and are on to next week’s game against Maryland.

Michigan commits fifth turnover

On 4th and 1 from the Northwestern 24-yard line, Michigan opted to keep the offense on the field. The Wolverines ran a read option, and the handoff exchange was fumbled. Northwestern started off on its own 24-yard line, after Michigan’s fifth turnover of the game. There’s 4:20 to go in the game, Northwestern up 22-21.

Bryce Underwood throws back-to-back pick

Michigan was putting quite the drive together thanks to a long run by Jordan Marshall, who went down with an injury on the tail end of that play. He’s in the medical tent. The Wolverines ran Bryson Kuzdzal a few times, but went back to the pass game on an RPO, and Underwood threw it right to Robert Fitzgerald, the Northwestern safety. The Wildcats are up 22-21 and take over on their own 22-yard line.

Michigan was facing 3rd and 9 on its own 26-yard line, and Bryce Underwood threw it right to Northwestern’s Jack Florentine, who returned it 34 yards to the Michigan 6-yard line. Caleb Komolafe powered into the end zone for a touchdown on the first play, giving the Wildcats a 22-21 lead with 12:05 remaining.

Northwestern had only scored on three field goals on short fields prior to this last drive, with the Wildcats marching 75 yards in 8 plays, spanning only 2:41 of clock time. Preston Stone scored on a quarterback sneak from 1 yard out, and Michigan’s lead is 21-6 with 13 minutes to go.
Preston Stone hit a couple big passes to get the Wildcats down to the goal line, completing one down the sideline on 3rd and 2 for a 22-yard gain and then hit his tight end Hunter Welcing over the middle for 24 yards to the 1.

Northwestern scores after fumbled punt

Northwestern went three-and-out and punted on its second drive of the third quarter, but Michigan return man Semaj Morgan fumbled the ball, recovered by the Wildcats at the Michigan 31-yard line. The defense got yet another stop, forcing Northwestern to a field goal, which was good by Jack Olsen from 35 yards out.
Michigan’s lead was cut to 14-9 with 6:09 remaining in the third quarter.

Michigan’s defense shut down Northwestern to set the tone in the second half, and the offense quickly scored to go up 14-6 with 10:29 remaining in the third quarter. Jordan Marshall ripped off a 65-yard run on 1st and 10, down to the Northwestern 9-yard line. Then, on the next play, Bryce Underwood kept on a read option for the 9-yard score.

Michigan had Dominic Zvada attempt a 60-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. Zvada had the leg, but it was just wide right. He couldn’t believe it, putting his hands on his helmet in disbelief. The Wolverines head into the half up 7-6.

Michigan fumbled running an end-around to Andrew Marsh that was blown up, giving Northwestern good field position yet again. The Wildcats drove only 39 yards on 7 plays to kick a 26-yard field goal by Jack Olsen. Michigan’s lead is 7-6 with 1 minute to go in the second quarter. The Wolverines used a timeout on defense and have two remaining.

Northwestern had a touchdown called back on offensive pass interference on a pick play, and the Wildcats wound up kicking a field goal. Jack Olsen, who’s now 7-of-7 on the season between 30-39 yards, made a 34-yarder. Michigan’s lead is 7-3 with 5:22 remaining in the second quarter.

Michigan was pinned at its own 9-yard line, but marched 91 yards in 12 plays on a beautiful drive that ended in a 1-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Jordan Marshall, his ninth rushing score of the year. The drive was highlighted by a 32-yard deep ball from Bryce Underwood — who’s 10-of-11 passing — to freshman wideout Andrew Marsh down to the 6-yard line on a 3rd and 6 play.
Michigan leads 7-0 with 13:11 remaining in the second quarter.

Jordan Marshall ran for a 17-yard touchdown on 3rd and 13, but it was called back on a questionable holding call on Andrew Sprague, who pancaked his defender. The Wolverines threw a short pass on 3rd and 23, setting up a field goal attempt, but Dominic Zvada missed the 34-yard try. That’s his fifth miss of the season.
