Michigan WR Channing Goodwin discusses goals for 2025 season, QB Bryce Underwood, more: 'We just want to win'

Michigan Wolverines football wide receiver Channing Goodwin played 30 offensive snaps in 2024, ranking fourth among Wolverine true freshmen on offense. The son of former Michigan offensive lineman Jonathan Goodwin was talked up by the coaches throughout the season and is expected to play much more in his second year.
“It was good,” Goodwin said of his freshman season on an appearance on ‘The M Zone.’ “It was great coming in as a freshman, being able to finally get here, see it for myself, be a part of the team.
“Obviously, we wanted to perform a little bit better than we did last year, but I had a good time overall. Beating the Buckeyes at the end — that was a great experience.”
A Charlotte, N.C., native, Goodwin had to adjust to the weather — much like his father, a South Carolina product, did back in the 1990s.
“The hardest part is just the weather,” Goodwin said. “That’s it. The weather is the main thing. The snow on the ground, walking to class while it was freezing cold outside.”
Michigan was 5-5 and fighting for bowl eligibility on senior day at The Big House last November, before rattling off victories over Northwestern and Ohio State in the regular season and Alabama in the bowl game to finish 8-5. The Wolverines ended the year strong but didn’t accomplish most of their primary goals. This year, the Wolverines are looking to get back to the CFP after making three-straight appearances from 2021-23.
“Coming into this year, we want to just win,” Goodwin said of Michigan’s aspirations.” That’s the main thing on our mind — go out there, win every game and just hold ourselves to that Michigan standard, for real. That’s the biggest thing as a team. We just want to go out there and compete, win and achieve all of our goals.”
The Wolverines will do it with a new offensive coordinator and quarterback. Chip Lindsey, who comes with plenty of experience calling plays, is in charge of the group, and freshman Bryce Underwood is widely viewed as the favorite to take snaps behind center.

“It’s gonna be a mixture of everything,” Goodwin said of Michigan’s approach offensively. “Coach Lindsey, coming from UNC, has brought his philosophy in waves up here to Ann Arbor with us.
“We’re gonna be Michigan. We’re gonna be able to attack you on the ground and in the air, so I’m looking forward to seeing how we develop and go throughout the season with our new offensive coordinator.”
Michigan’s offense ranked 131st nationally with 129.1 passing yards per game last season — and Underwood will be a big part in resurrecting the aerial attack.
“Bryce has come in, gone a great job early enrolling from high school,” Goodwin explained. “He’s blessed with all the physical traits, and he just keeps on progressing each and every day in practice going against our great defense. He’s been great so far.”
Michigan’s wide receivers are looking for a resurgence, too, after an unproductive 2024 campaign. Goodwin praised the way position coach Ron Bellamy and assistant wide receivers coach Erik Campbell have been preparing them.
“Our whole staff with the receivers does a great job,” he said. “They always have us prepared and get us right in practice, so I can’t say enough about them.”
