The hosts began the show by discussing the stakes of the game for each team, particularly how important it is for Michigan coming off a three-score loss at USC.

“It’s going to come down to their defense, I think, and the Michigan offense,” Balas said. “I think they’re going to score some points. They moved the ball on Ohio State at times. I know it was 24-6, but I watched that game, so they’ve got a dangerous quarterback, clearly. The kid can do everything. You got to keep him bottled up.

“They have a lot to play for. It’s funny, you look at all these teams we wrote off earlier in the year. Clay, you said Northwestern is in the mix for a Big Ten title, which is funny — and they will be, eventually. But Washington, not necessarily. They needed a miracle comeback — not a miracle, but they were down 20-0, if I’m not mistaken, before ripping off 24-straight points. But that’s still a good win if you’re going across the country and playing there, and they got it. That’s all that matters.

“But this is one of those games that somebody said that Jim Harbaugh never lost, and he was right. You come back against a good, not great, team, you’re playing at home in a game like this. This is one that you have to win if you want to be taken seriously as a contender or even as a good team in the Big Ten. Good teams don’t lose these games. This is where we are, a crossroads game, where we’re going to learn a lot. It’s going to go one of two ways, in my opinion. The Michigan season is going to go one of two ways. You win this game, I think you’re in good shape to be 9-2 going into that Ohio State game, and then anything can happen.”
