The Michigan Wolverines have a pair of alumni with the Detroit Pistons this season in guard Caris LeVert and guard/forward Duncan Robinson, and their former head coach was there to see them on Sunday afternoon in the home opener against the Boston Celtics.

LeVert did not play on Sunday, dealing with an injury, while Robinson had 8 points in 30 minutes.

John Beilein was in attendance at the game to support his former players, who joined the organization this offseason during free agency. LeVert was a lightly-recruited three-star in the 2012 class who was expected to redshirt his first season, but earned minutes on Michigan’s 2012-13 squad that went to the national title game. Over the next three seasons, he came a go-to guy for the Wolverines and one of the Big Ten’s most versatile guards. He was the No. 20 overall pick of the Indiana Packers in the 2016 NBA Draft and has spent time since with the Brooklyn Nets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Atlanta Hawks and now in Detroit.

Robinson transferred to U-M from Williams College in 2014 and sat out a year before making an impact as a key piece and three-point shooter, later becoming a fixture on a team in 2018 that would go to the national title game in 2018. Despite going undrafted, Robinson had a 7-year career with the Miami Heat and has made nearly $90 million in his career.

Beilein served as Michigan’s coach from 2007-19, transforming the program into a modern contender and making two national title appearances, three Elite Eight trips and five appearances in the Sweet Sixteen.

Michigan quote of the day

“Both Mara and Johnson showed some signs of rust, which is understandable since they didn’t have much practice time leading up to the game. Johnson, before returning from injury, missed weeks of practice. A starter, Mara missed a few shots around the basket, including two on one possession at one point, and Johnson, who came off the bench, missed a floater in the lane, had an offensive foul trying to get post position and got the ball poked away while on the block. Being a limited participant in practice is way different than playing one of the best teams in the country on the road, so that was a great experience to accelerate their re-acclimation to game action.”
