Michigan Wolverines forward Yaxel Lendeborg was named an AP Preseason All-American on Monday afternoon two weeks out from the start of the 2025-26 season.

Lendeborg, who was the No. 1 overall player in the transfer portal this offseason, was named to the list of five along with Purdue’s Braden Smith, Texas Tech’s JT Toppin, BYU’s AJ Dybantsa and Florida’s Alex Condon.

Despite the hype and a 31-point, 12-rebound performance in the exhibition against Cincinnati, Michigan head coach Dusty May wants to see him develop the championship-level habits it will take to unlock his full potential.

“They were not anywhere near where they need to be for him and for us,” May said on Monday. “He’s gradually improved. As we told him yesterday, over mountains are more mountains and over that mountain is another mountain. What does the winner of a pie-eating contest typically get? More pie, so it’s gonna be the same if he gets 40 and 20 next game, we’re gonna be on him about what he needs to work on and improve on, and continue striving to get better. Like I said, he had 31 and 12, and me, personally, I was disappointed. He can play better than that, he can impact winning more than he did, and that just shows how high a ceiling he has.”

Michigan quote of the day

“During training camp, we talk about our rivalries. We talk about every game. We talk about all the big games. They’ll definitely re-educate them on what this means. This means a lot. This means everything. We’ll talk about Paul Bunyan, what that means to us here in this facility and in Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan. We’ll talk about the history of the rivalry, what it means, and all the implications of what winning this game is about. So we’ll definitely educate our young guys and let them know that this is a game we put everything into.”
