Newsstand: Michigan opening investigation of athletic department
The University of Michigan has begun the process of doing a full investigation on the athletic due to practices and culture issues that have popped up over the last few years. Law firm Jenner & Block is expected to handle the case.
U-M’s leadership took another hit this week when football head coach Sherrone Moore was fired for an inappropriate relationship with a staffer, followed by a detainment by the police after heading to her apartment and allegedly making threats to his life. Athletic director Warde Manuel has another scandal on his hands.
The entire saga has shed another light on perpetual chaos and scandal within the Michigan athletic department and administration.

Michigan regent Jordan Acker made his statement on the matter on X on Saturday:
“Like so many Michiganders, fans, and alumni, I was shocked and disgusted by the revelations this week. As I’ve taken more time to gather facts and understand the failures that led to this moment, one thing is clear: The University of Michigan must be a leader and the best in all areas, including ethics, accountability, and transparency. The decision to retain Jenner & Block as an independent third party to thoroughly investigate what happened and how it was allowed to happen is a necessary first step. My expectations are clear: the findings of that investigation must be made public. Transparency is essential to restoring trust and meeting the expectations of the people of this state, our students, our faculty, our alumni, and everyone who believes in the values this university is supposed to represent. Anything less would fall short of who we claim to be.”

Michigan quote of the day
“Michigan had a 30-point lead and the game all but wrapped up Tuesday against Villanova. Over this latest stretch of the season, the Wolverines have delivered knockout blow after knockout blow, the matchups non-competitive at least for the last third of the game. With a lot of game time left, CBS Sports analyst Jon Rothstein has tweeted ‘Michigan by TKO,’ but didn’t tonight. Maryland went 12 rounds with the Wolverines, but was overwhelmed late and lost by unanimous decision. Even when Michigan doesn’t have its ‘A’ game, it does enough well to eventually wear you down and pull away. The Wolverines were down five at halftime and put up a crooked number — 56 points — in the second half, outscoring Maryland by 23 in the final 20 minutes, to win comfortably.”
