Newsstand: Michigan softball wins Big Ten Tournament

The Michigan Wolverines softball team has captured the Big Ten Tournament crown for the second year in a row. It grabbed a 2-0 win over No. 9 UCLA to do so on Saturday afternoon, its second shutout win over a top-10 team in three days.
The tournament crown is the 12th in program history, and allowed them to grab the Big Ten conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Michigan scored two runs in the sixth inning to break up what had been a pitcher’s duel to that point. Senior right-handed pitcher Lauren Derkowsko, who also earned Tournament MOP honors, held UCLA to three hits, two walks and two strikeouts through five innings of work. Right-hander Erin Hoehn closed the deal with six straight outs over the last two innings to grab the save, which also earned her All-Tournament team honors.
The victory moved the Wolverines to 38-19 on the season.
The NCAA Tournament bracket and regional sites will be announced Sunday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The appearance in the Big Dance will be the 29th appearance in 30 seasons for U-M softball, and the second under head coach Bonnie Tholl. Michigan has reached the Women’s College World Series 12 times and won the 2005 national title.

Michigan quote of the day
“It’s clear, though, that this is headed in the right direction (again), and it’s a team effort. Michigan assistant coach Akeem Miskdeen and the rest of the staff have been “huge” on the recruiting trail. Miskdeen told May after the Wolverines returned from Atlanta following a loss to Auburn that he’d already set up a visit with Illinois transfer Morez Johnson, and that got the ball really rolling. Johnson is “just what they were looking for” in terms of toughness and potential, and he’s got more to give offensively … and they plan on getting it out of him.”
