The Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball program made waves on Saturday night with the news it would hire Florida Atlantic’s Dusty May as its next head coach, replacing Juwan Howard after five seasons in the role.

Michigan, led by athletic director Warde Manuel and former coach John Beilein, stepped in and got the deal done with schools like Louisville, Vanderbilt, West Virginia and others showing interest in the FAU coach, who took his team to a Final Four last season and returned to the NCAA Tournament this year.

Tweeting from a suite at the Big Ten hockey tournament championship game, Michigan President Santa Ono confirmed the news after reports emerged late Saturday night.

“I am thrilled to welcome Dusty May to the University of Michigan as our new head basketball coach,” Ono said.

No official release has been sent out by the Wolverines to this point, but contract details are still being hammered out. May is reportedly set to get a five-year contract from Michigan.

“May became swept away with the alumni network and its fierce loyalty to the university and athletics, sources said,” ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said “His belief is that that will help transcend some of the inherently transactional nature of the modern NIL/transfer portal era in recruiting and player retention.”

Michigan quote of the day

“I thought his workout went very well. It was a 25-minute throwing session around 60 throws. And I think my biggest takeaway was it was better than his performance at the NFL scouting combine was there. We saw him struggle at times throwing to his left, struggled a little bit with touch throws today. It was crisp. He missed, I counted two misses.

“I think he would tell you he maybe missed three or four of those, where I thought those were drops, but it was super clean. And I think showed the arm talent. The velocity was absolutely there. There were times where he’s rolling, throwing off platform. There was a great deep throw off his back foot while on the roll, showing you some of the arm strength that he has… And I talked to a GM today. There were plenty of them here who think that he is still in play very much as a top-six pick in this year’s draft.”
