Newsstand: Savannah Sutherland grabs hurdles national title

Michigan women’s track and field’s Savannah Sutherland won the 400-meter hurdles title to close out the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Oregon. As a team, the Wolverines tied for 26th of 63 participating teams.
Sutherland’s title closed out a productive and impressive career for the Maize and Blue with her second national title in the hurdles and her third-straight top-two finish. During the race, she led the entire way and ran a personal best of 52.46 seconds to finish 2.20 seconds faster than second-place finisher Akala Garrett of Texas.
Sutherland, who is a Borden, Saskatchewan native, set four records in the program record, NCAA record, NCAA Championship meet record and the Canadian national record. She is the second runner in NCAA history to break 53 seconds, with Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone setting the previous collegiate mark of 52.75 in 2018. She also earned first-team All-America honors.
Other notable performances included 14th and 21st place finishes, respectively, for Elizabeth Tapper and Abigail Russell in shot put. Emma Yungeberg finished 17th in the javelin, while Clare McNamara as 20th in the heptathlon. Tapper earned second team All-America honors, while Russell, Yungeberg and McNamara were honorable mentions.

Michigan quote of the day
“He’s elite. Michigan wouldn’t have been looking at him if he wasn’t. Rankings are rankings, but I personally think he’s the best 2026 (long snapper) in the country. He’s an absolute stud. He’s 6-foot-2, 240 pounds and a great athlete. He snaps and spins a great ball — high velocity and very accurate. He’s as elite as you can get.”
