The Michigan Wolverines lost a 93-73 contest to Illinois on Sunday that not only took the Big Ten regular season title path a bit out of their control, but also rings as a concern heading into championship-contention season.

Still, there is a version of Michigan basketball in there somewhere that has shown itself to play much better than the recent stretch of games. The task now is finding a way to get back to its form from earlier in the season.

TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome, Chris Balas and Clayton Sayfie discuss the loss to Illinois, Michigan’s recent downward trend and how the team can get itself back going heading into the rest of March.

”Clayton picked a loss and I was with him feeling like, boy, this is a bad matchup for Michigan,” Balas said on Monday’s show. “Everybody points to matchups still like, ‘Illinois lost by 50 to Duke. So they suck.’ Well, they have players and they match up well with Michigan. Michigan has been struggling. You can tell that they’ve kind of hit the wall. The flu has been ravaging that team. So we knew that was going to be a hard game. I didn’t know it was going to be that hard. But they got to pick it up if they’re going to have a chance to make a run in March.

“But that starts with getting healthy. Number one, they’ve got to start making shots again, fellas. I don’t know what’s going on there. But what I wrote after the game is it can be a fluke, but after a couple of games, it becomes a trend. And then after a month and a half, maybe it’s who you are in conference play against better competition.

“You hope that they’re a little bit better than what they’ve shown. If they can get to like 35%, then this can be a good basketball team. And I think they’ve got better shooters than they’ve shown, but it’s all, it’s all upstairs with the confidence, right? You’ve got to have that if you want to be a good shooting team. So it was a disappointing loss, but an opportunity against Maryland to right the ship.”
