Podcast: What does Jake Garcia add to Michigan's quarterback room?

The Michigan Wolverines are adding some more experience to its quarterback group in 2025 with all signs pointing to former East Carolina signal-caller Jake Garcia joining the program. U-M is a bit light on experience and has to backfill some of the losses from last year.
TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome and Clayton Sayfie discuss the buzz and what he might be able to add to the program.
(NOTE: This episode was recorded Monday afternoon prior to Garcia’s commitment)
”He’s got a big arm,” Sayfie said on the show. He’s a guy with some talent, a former top-100 recruit out of California who was originally committed to USC, then ended up signing with Miami. But there’s some talent in there and he has battled some injuries along the way. Kind of had a long journey in college football. But we talked about this a couple of months ago, right around the spring game is they still lost two transfer quarterbacks last year. Alex Orgi and Jayden Denegal. Davis Warren got hurt in the bowl game and he’s not gonna be healthy, you wouldn’t think, until fall camp at the absolute earliest.
“It only makes sense to replace some of these guys. Chase Herbstreit. I don’t really count as a viable option to play this year. So you have Bryce Underwood and then Mikey Keene, who came in and got injured right before the spring. So, numbers-wise, you need somebody capable. You only have one quarterback on the entire roster that’s thrown a pass in college, and that would be Mikey Keene, who has never played at the Power Four level. So I think it’s a good thing to, potentially, add Jake Garcia. It looks like it’s going to happen at this point.

“He’s a guy that would come in knowing that, ‘hey, I gotta work for anything I get. If I could get the number two job.’ Very, very slim chance he wins a starting job. I wouldn’t project it. But you can’t put a limit on anybody. But at the very least, it seems like if he’s willing to come to Michigan, he’d be willing to help mentor Bryce Underwood be a positive addition to the room, to the offense and to learn.”
