Michigan football is off and running in preparation for the 2023 season, and there have been several standouts. Every position is strong, but there are a few standouts at each. On the offensive line — and to nobody’s surprise — senior guard Zak Zinter is off to a great start.
“We’ve been talking about ‘Zin’ for 2, 3, 4 years now,” Michigan junior quarterback J.J. McCarthy said this week. “He’s never gone anywhere but up when we talk about physicality, strength, quickness. But what I’ve seen from him this year is he’s really taken that balcony view look as an offensive lineman. He’s not just thinking about his job, but why am I doing this for the play at hand? That’s the biggest step I think he’s going to take, because when you have all those physical tools and all that God given ability, it’s that little stuff mentally that’s going to make you great. He’s really embracing that wholeheartedly.”
On the schedule and the “easy games” to start the year, McCarthy and his teammates haven’t given it much thought. They want to win every game, no matter who it is. They’re approaching each game one at a time.

“It doesn’t matter who we’re playing. We could be out in the parking lot right there, could be at Yost [Arena],” the Michigan quarterback said. “We’re going to bring our all. It takes day by day, game by game … doesn’t matter who we’re playing. We’re going to give it our all.”
