The fallout from Michigan‘s firing of former head coach Sherrone Moore has taken another turn, as he is currently behind bars and in jail in Washtenaw County. Multiple outlets have reported the news, confirmed by TheWolverine.com a little after 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday night.

A statement released from the Pittsfield police department read as follows, saying Moore is being investigated for assault after being picked up at the 300 block of Ann Arbor Saline Road:

“The Pittsfield Police Department responded to the above location at the above date and time for the purposes of investigating an alleged assault. The Department has received multiple media requests for information. A suspect in this case was taken into custody. This incident does not appear to be random in nature, and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community. The suspect was lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor. At this time, the investigation is ongoing. Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details. Further details regarding the incident will be released as soon as permissible.”

ESPN’s Dan Wetzel was the first to report that Moore was detained by police on Wednesday following his dismissal due to an inappropriate relationship with a staffer.

“The City of Saline Police Department assisted in locating and detaining former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore,” the department told ESPN. “Mr. Moore was turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for investigation into potential charges.”

Michigan fixture and author John U. Bacon chimed in after the news on Wednesday night, saying:

“Back from a book event for The Gales of November here in Houghton Michigan, and now wading through reports, some reliable, some not. But Sherrone Moore has been fired for cause, he is in police custody after threatening the employee in question, and on “self-protection” watch. …

“Sherrone Moore’s firing raises more questions than answers, including who knew what and when? I’d been hearing rumors for years, which often turn out to be nonsense, but nothing as bad as this. What did Moore’s boss Warde Manuel know, and when? What did he do about it? Stay tuned.”

This story is far from over, with a police saga now unfolding up against the backdrop of a coaching search and Citrus Bowl prep.
