ANN ARBOR – Michigan Wolverines coordinators Chip Lindsey (offense/quarterbacks coach) and Wink Martindale (defense) spoke to the media on Saturday in Ann Arbor as fall camp moves into the padded phases for the program.

Lindsey is currently tasked with revamping the offense and picking a quarterback ahead of the 2025 season. Freshman Bryce Underwood, graduates Mikey Keene and Jake Garcia and sophomore Jadyn Davis are all in the mix for the job.

Lindsey says they will take their time making the decision, but want it as soon as it is apparent.

”Yeah, I think you always wanna know as soon as you can,” Lindsey said on Saturday afternoon. “I mean, that’s the goal. I do think that we have a good plan with the competition and getting guys reps, and I think more than just getting reps, putting them in different situations. It takes time to do that. For instance, you can have so many days of what they call install. Usually base downs and so forth. But then as you get to third down, you don’t do that early in camp sometimes, as you get to red zone.

“So I think for us, we’re trying to rotate those guys and put them all in those different situations and see how they respond. The key to playing good quarterback is understanding situational football and making great decisions. And they’re all competitive. They’re all smart, they’re all doing a great job when they get their reps. When the heat’s and you’re in those tight moments, you know who can run the team and who can make the best decisions.”

Michigan DC Wink Martindale feels the momentum

Michigan’s defense under Martindale ended on a high note last year, allowing 29 points total in its last three games, two of them including wins over Ohio State and Alabama. He said the momentum has built confident, but that it’s time to look toward the present.

”Well, I think it builds confidence in all of them,” Marindale said. “As a coach, now you’re saying don’t rest on that because that’s over with… We talked about in the first meeting, our goals, I said, ‘we’re not talking about them anymore because tomorrow’s not promised. Let’s have the best day we can have. That’s what it’s about. Just having the best day you can have today. We have a long football day today with our walkthroughs and meetings and all those things of that nature. And then we finish it with a practice this evening.

“It’s been fun. It’s early. I’m glad I wasn’t here [at the podium] next week. I probably won’t be in as good a mood as I am right now. But today we get to thud and actually play some football. So I’m excited about that.”
