The Wolverine Answers Your Michigan Football, Recruiting & Ncaa Transfer Portal Questions I #Goblue

The Michigan Wolverines are out to defend their 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship with a different twist this time around. The head coach is new in Sherrone Moore and there will be plenty of fresh faces on offense, but it also comes in a year where the CFP expands to 12 teams and the Big Ten grows by four members.

Michigan plays one of the tougher schedules in the country this year, but could that help them in pursuit of a spot in the 12-team field? TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome and Clayton Sayfie discussed that and several other topics on a mailbag episode of the Monday show.

Michigan has been criticized for its strength of schedule in the past, but that should not be the case this year. It welcomes Texas to the Big House in Week 2 in a game that features a pair of playoff teams from last season. The Wolverines will also head to Washington for their first Big Ten matchup against the Huskies in a rematch of the national title game. Other games on the schedule include home games vs. USC and Oregon and the season finale at Ohio State.

Sayfie believes U-M will make it to the CFP in 2024, marking their fourth-straight trip to the event.

“I’ll say yes,” Sayfie declared. “They probably will not win the Big Ten and get a first-round bye. But I think Michigan, as we sit here on May 13th, will get into the college football playoff. I think the really tough schedule hurts them in a way. It also helps them in another way where you could lose three games and still maybe back in and get into the playoff at the back end of that top 12.

“It’s going to be hard. I know [On3’s Andy Staples] has about 15-20 teams that could make that playoff and compete to advance in the playoff. I think Michigan is certainly one of those teams. The schedule will give them the opportunity to notch the wins that they need to get in.”
