Michigan scored a big win on the recruiting trail on Tuesday afternoon, landing Top 100 Billings (Mont.) West tight end Matt Ludwig. The Wolverine’s EJ Holland shares his thoughts on what this recruiting win means for the Wolverines.

Ludwig Recruitment

Michigan extended an offer to Ludwig in April of last year and made him a top overall target throughout the cycle.

The Wolverines hosted Ludwig on multiple occasions and also flew out to Montana to meet with him in the winter. U-M tight ends coach Steve Casula returned to Montana on Monday and had a great conversation with Ludwig and those around him. That visit ultimately sealed the deal for the Wolverines.

Ludwig committed to Michigan behind the scenes on Monday and announced his decision publicly the following day.

Here is what Holland had to say about Ludwig.

“This is the biggest recruiting win of the cycle for Michigan so far,” Holland said. “Michigan identified Ludwig last year and made him one of its top overall priorities. While Ludwig is hidden out in Montana, he checks a lot of boxes for the Wolverines. He’s built well at 6-foot-4, 240 pounds and runs in the 11.2’s in the 100-meter. That’s faster than a lot of wide receivers Michigan has landed in recent cycles, which is very impressive. Ludwig could very well be Michigan’s next Colston Loveland.”

Ludwig committed to Michigan over fellow finalists Georgia, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

At 6-foot-4, 240 pounds, Ludwig is ranked as the No. 5 tight end and No. 92 overall prospect nationally, per On3. He is also ranked as the No. 1 overall recruit in the state of Montana this cycle.

Michigan now has six commits in its 2026 recruiting class — Ludwig, Top 100 Newberry Park (Calif.) High quarterback Brady Smigiel, On300 Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin cornerback Brody Jennings, three-star Cartersville (Ga.) Cass offensive lineman Bear McWhorter, three-star Washington (D.C.) St. John’s EDGE Tariq Boney and three-star Dallas (Texas) Parish Episcopal wide receiver Jaylen Pile.

Michigan entered the day with the No. 27 ranked 2026 recruiting class nationally, per the On3 Industry team recruiting rankings. Michigan is also ranked No. 8 in the Big Ten. USC currently has the top class in the conference.

Michigan also has the No. 10 ranked transfer portal class this cycle, per the On3 transfer portal index.
