NC State football coach Dave Doeren was back on the golf course for this year’s annual Peach Bowl Challenge. Doeren has now participated in the charity event eight times.

The tournament features 22 current or former college football coaches playing in 11 two-man teams competing for a share of a $330,000 charity purse.

Doeren confesses to not being an avid golfer, but he looks forward to the chance to play. This year he was teamed with former Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer, and each raised $10,000 for their respective charities.

“I would say that I am not someone that loves playing golf, but I love raising money for our charities,” Doeren acknowledged. “I do love being outside, be with good people and get money back to our community. It’s kind of a no-brainer.”

For Doeren and his wife Sara, helping the special needs community is a cause “near and dear to our heart.”

“We started out with Wake County schools, and that transitioned to 321 Coffee, and now GiGi’s Playhouse,” Doeren explained for his charity choice at the Peach Bowl Challenge.

“We do a night called victory day with them where they all come out and literally go through a football practice with us and score touchdowns and celebrate,” Doeren added. “They are with us every Friday, hand out popsicles and ice cream to our players.”

The golf tournament was a nice break from after completing spring practices, but Doeren was pleased with how it went for NC State football.

“It was a fun spring,” Doeren confirmed. “We have a lot of experience on our roster, a lot of guys who have played a lot of snaps. Our spring was more about getting the rest of them into the mix and developing behind our experience.”

Doeren acknowledged the high expectations facing NC State football. Just this week the Pack was No. 10 in CBS Sports’ post-spring top 25.

“We have high expectations as a coaching staff and as a team,” Doeren noted. “If we didn’t feel that we were getting that respect, I think we’d be upset. We’re excited that people see what we’re doing. We don’t think that wins games for us.

“Our team and our staff understand that it’s just recognition. It’s not anything that helps you win. We can’t be complacent because we’ve gained the recognition. It’s a team that deserves it. They’ve worked hard. They’ve earned it.”

Doeren also took some time to answer some light-hearted questions, which can be seen in the video below.

Who would Dave Doeren like to play golf with? “Jack Nicklaus. Clint Eastwood. Chris Farley.”

Who is Doeren’s favorite golfer? “Tom Watson, Kansas City native. [Phil] Mickelson or [Tiger] Woods, one of those two. I haven’t really caught up with who the new guys are in the golf world. I don’t watch a lot of golf, but growing up it’s probably Tom.”

What would be your Master’s winner dinner: “Rib eyes, Brussel sprouts, cold beer.”

Who would you want to caddie for you in Master’s?” “Ickey Ekwonu. I’d love to see him walking the course. That’s a big man right there.”

What are your plans this summer with the family? “We go up to Lake Gaston, that’s our little getaway. I am taking two sons to Montana and doing a little fishing there. Lake Gaston is kind of where we hide out. It’s our spot.”

What’s your go-to show you are going to binge on Netflix? “I would say probably Ozark. That takes me back to my Midwest roots, but only because I watched an episode [recently].”
