Former NC State OL Tim McKay signs undrafted rookie deal with Washington Commanders

Even though he didn’t hear his name called in this weekend’s NFL Draft, former NC State offensive lineman Timothy McKay is headed to the next level.
The Raleigh native is set to sign an undrafted rookie free agent deal with the Washington Commanders, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported just after the seventh round concluded Saturday evening. McKay is set to make $275,000 guaranteed after signing the deal.
McKay, a three-year starter with the Wolfpack, was able to display his talents in front of all 32 NFL teams at the East-West Shrine Bowl on Jan. 30 in Arlington, Texas, where he turned some heads. He was expected to be a mid-round draft pick, but fell out of it completely after he tore his pectoral muscle at NC State’s pro day.
He made the move from tackle to guard during the 2023 season and remained on the inside for his final collegiate season. That versatility could help McKay’s professional hopes, though he projects to play guard in the NFL.

The 6-foot-4, 312-pound offensive lineman allowed 71 total quarterback pressures, which led to just 10 sacks, in his five-year career at NC State. McKay did not give up a sack during the 2023 campaign, his only of his Pack tenure, in 489 pass-blocking opportunities.
McKay, the younger brother of former Wolfpack quarterback Matthew McKay, arrived on campus as a 16-year-old prospect. He quickly developed into a starter on the offensive line and was key in protecting the Pack’s quarterbacks over his final three seasons at the collegiate level.
NC State had just one draft pick this season as offensive tackle Anthony Belton was selected with the 54th overall pick by the Green Bay Packers in Friday night’s second round. The Wolfpack has produced 30 draft picks through coach Dave Doeren’s first 12 seasons in Raleigh, including seven offensive linemen.
