A point guard was near the top of NC State’s transfer portal wishlist. It was able to cross that off as Michigan State transfer guard Tre Holloman committed to the Wolfpack on Sunday.

Holloman, one of the Spartans’ team captains this past season, has one year of eligibility remaining. He picked NC State over significant interest from Baylor, UNC and Villanova in the transfer portal.

Holloman averaged a career-best 9.1 points with 1.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists on 37.3 percent shooting during his junior campaign at Michigan State. He posted a career-most 137 total assists this past season, an increase from 84 as a sophomore and 29 as a freshman with the Spartans. Holloman provides the floor general that NC State coach Will Wade was missing from his first-ever roster at NC State.

The Minneapolis, Minn., native has the ability to score in bunches, while he possesses good court vision to find his teammates. The veteran guard scored in double figures 16 times this season, while he dished at least four assists in 17 games.

Holloman does have experience against the Pack’s arch rival, UNC. He scored 19 points with seven assists and three steals in the Spartans’ 94-91 overtime win over the Tar Heels in Maui on Nov. 27.

Before his collegiate career in East Lansing, Holloman was a highly-coveted four-star recruit out of Saint Paul (Minn.) Cretin-Derham Hall High as the No. 99 player in the 2022 recruiting cycle. Holloman was the 2022 Minnesota Gatorade Player of the Year after he posted 18.8 points, 10.4 assists, 8.3 rebounds and 3.3 steals per game as a senior.

NC State has seven scholarships remaining for the 2025-26 season. Holloman is the Pack’s third transfer portal pick up off the offseason, joining McNeese guards Alyn Breed and Quadir Copeland.
