NC State basketball falls at No. 8 Duke, 88-73 (with box score)

A red-hot shooting Duke team proved too much for NC State basketball Saturday afternoon, with the Blue Devils prevailing 88-73 at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C.
The defeat knocked NC State down to 9-9 overall and 2-5 in the ACC. Duke improved to 14-2 and 4-1.
Both teams shot well in the first half, but the Pack made just 5 of 20 shot attempts to start the second half to fall behind as many as 19 points with 12:11 left. NC State did not quit and on three occasions cut the lead down to nine points, but it could never get closer.
Duke finished the contest making 58.3 percent of its shots (35 of 60), and had five players in double digits, led by forward and freshman sensation Paolo Banchero, who had 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field.
Sophomore 7-foot center Mark Williams added a double-double (and near triple-double) with 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocked shots. Reserve post player Theo John added 10 points off the bench.
NC State, already shorthanded without redshirt junior center Manny Bates and junior forward Greg Gantt, played without freshman forward Ernest Ross, who was in a boot and on crutches, leaving only sophomores Ebenezer Dowuona and Jaylon Gibson available taller than 6-foot-7.

That helped Duke have a 58-38 advantage in points in the paint.
Redshirt sophomore wing Dereon Seabron had another double-double for NC State with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Dowuona was a board away from joining him at 10 points and nine rebounds.
Freshman guard Terquavion Smith added 19 points, although he shot just 1 of 9 on three-point shot attempts.
Next on the schedule for NC State is Virginia Tech coming to PNC Arena on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff. The Wolfpack upset the Hokies on the road, 68-63, on Jan. 4. The rematch is set to be broadcast by ACC Network.
