NC State sophomore catcher Alex Sosa entered the transfer portal Wednesday afternoon, TheWolfpacker.com and On3 have learned. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

Sosa started 52 games, mostly as NC State’s primary catcher, this past season. He posted a .291 batting average with 16 doubles, 10 home runs and 40 RBI in his second collegiate season. Sosa logged 16 multi-hit games and was tied for the team best with 13 multi-RBI performances this spring.

While Sosa was a useful bat in the Wolfpack’s order this spring, he struggled with plate discipline. He logged 50 strikeouts to just 33 walks, If his swing and miss rate goes down, Sosa has the tools to become one of college baseball’s premier backstops.

The Viera, Fla., native emerged as one of the Wolfpack’s pieces of the future as a freshman as he was an integral part of the program’s 2024 College World Series appearance following a month-long battle with the flu and mononucleosis. He hit .230 with six homers and 24 RBI in his first season, including nine hits in the NCAA Tournament.

Sosa’s departure, coupled with Drew Lanphere going in the portal earlier this offseason, creates a need at catcher. The Wolfpack only has rising redshirt freshman catcher Preston Bonn, who is 4-for-8 with a double, home run and three RBI in three games with the Coastal Plain League’s Holly Springs Salamanders this summer, on the roster. NC State will likely look for a veteran catcher to add to its 2026 roster.

The catcher is NC State’s 16th transfer portal departure of the summer. He is one of two starters to enter, joining rising senior third baseman Matt Heavner, while rising sophomore third baseman Ryder Woodson seemed primed for a breakout second year in Raleigh before he committed to Mississippi State.
