After losing several infielders to the transfer portal, NC State needed to reload through the NCAA’s free agency. The Wolfpack started that process by landing a commitment from LSU transfer Mikey Ryan on Thursday afternoon. He has three years of eligibility remaining.

Ryan, who was named the No. 69 true freshman in the country by Perfect Game, was 1-for-3 with a run scored, two walks and two strikeouts in 16 games played this spring at LSU. He was primarily used as a defensive replacement for the Tigers as he posted five putouts with an assist and an error in his first taste of collegiate action.

Before Ryan arrived in Baton Rouge, La., he was the No. 30 ranked shortstop and the No. 113 overall player in the 2024 recruiting class, according to Perfect Game. He was also the top-ranked shortstop in Louisiana’s 2024 recruiting cycle out of Luling (La.) Rummel High. There was a chance that Ryan would be selected in last year’s MLB Draft, but he elected to begin his college career with the Tigers.

Ryan is currently hitting .292 with four doubles, a triple, a home run and 11 RBI this summer with the La Crosse Loggers of the Northwoods League. He has struck out 15 times with 24 walks and five hit by pitches to go with a whopping 24-for-28 on stolen base attempts in 16 games this summer.

At NC State, Ryan will likely compete for the open starting spot at shortstop that was vacated by Justin DeCriscio after he exhausted his eligibility this spring. Ryan could also push to play at second if rising junior infielder Luke Nixon were to slide to shortstop going into the 2026 season. No matter where Ryan ends up playing for the Wolfpack, he provides defensive versatility in the middle infield.

The rising sophomore is the Wolfpack’s third transfer portal addition of the offseason. He joins right-handed pitchers Collins Black (Duke) and Ryder Garino (South Carolina), both rising sophomores as well.
