Terquavion Smith is the ACC’s second-leading scorer and ranks No. 5 in the conference in assists per game. As a result, the NC State sophomore guard is garnering plenty of award recognition, including a recent mention by the Jerry West Award.

Each season, the Jerry West Award and the Basketball Hall of Fame recognize the best shooting guard in college basketball. Smith made the award’s top-10 list Tuesday. He is one of two ACC athletes to make the list, along with Miami’s Isaiah Wong. Wisconsin’s Johnny Davis won the award in 2022.

The Hall of Fame began awarding this honor in 2015, and Duke’s RJ Barrett is the only ACC athlete to receive the honor since then. So far this year, Smith is averaging 18.5 points and 4.6 assists per game, which are both improvements from his freshman season with NC State. He is also tied for second in the ACC with 1.7 steals per game.

Quote of the day

This quote is from men’s basketball head coach Kevin Keatts’ Monday morning ACC Teleconference. He shared his thoughts on Terquavion Smith’s season so far.

“The thing that I’ve been really impressed with him is that he, a lot of times when people go through their draft process they don’t listen, and he’s really listened to what the scouts have talked about. One of the things we talked about is if you’re not having a good game scoring the ball, how do you impact the game in other ways? Even though he didn’t score, … he made a lot of passes to lead to scoring and 10 assists a career high for him.

“That’s the maturity of his game. I don’t know if he’s first, second, third or fourth in the league in assists but that’s one of the parts of his game that I think has really grown and, it’s respectful because we all know that he’s a natural scorer, but when you can also get your teammates involved, I think that’s a maturity thing for him.”
