It was not as pretty as the first two games, but No. 14 NC State baseball completed the series sweep of Boston College in an 18-16 win over the Eagles on Sunday afternoon at Doak Field.

The two teams combined for 34 runs, 34 hits and 11 home runs in the matinee contest to close the first ACC weekend of the season.

NC State (12-2, 3-0 ACC) was able to take a 7-1 lead by the third inning, which was powered by a three-run blast by ECU transfer Alec Makarewicz in the first and a two-run homer by Eli Serrano III in the third.

The Eagles, however, were able to make it a game with a five-run fifth inning to cut the Wolfpack lead to one run. But NC State responded with four more runs in the bottom of the frame, including a three-run long ball from Serrano. That marked his first multi-homer game of his career.

NC State went on to hold a nine-run lead after Josh Hogue joined the homer party in the seventh, which gave the Pack a 16-7 advantage. But Boston College hung around with five runs in the eighth and followed that with a grand slam in the ninth. NC State was able to survive as it required three pitchers to record an out each to close the game.

The Pack had six batters with three-hit efforts, as well as four home runs and six doubles to total 10 extra-base hits. Makarewicz and Serrano had five RBI each, which was the first time in nearly a year that NC State had a pair of players with that many runs accounted for each.

Wolfpack bullpen arm Shane Van Dam (2-0) earned the win after he tossed 1.0 innings in relief of starter Dom Fritton. Van Dam allowed two runs on two hits, while he recorded a strikeout and a walk in his performance. In all, NC State used nine arms in the win.

Quote of the day

Though the Pack lost in the ACC tournament championship game, the Wolfpack feels that it still proved something to the rest of the league.

“We fought to get here…Before the season even started, we were picked eighth, which we knew we were a better team than that, and we wanted to prove to everybody that we’re better than that,” senior guard Madison Hayes said. “I feel like we did that. They know about us now. Obviously this hurts, but we’re fighters.”
