Another year, another NC State successful showing in the Learfield Director’s Cup under Athletic Director Boo Corrigan. The Wolfpack finished 20th in the annual competition, marking its fifth consecutive top-25 place and its sixth such effort in school history.

The Pack was one of five ACC programs to place inside the top 20, joined by Stanford (No. 3), UNC (No. 4), Duke (No. 10) and Virginia (No. 12), while Texas won the cup.

NC State finished the year with 11 teams inside the top-25 to close their respective seasons, including six inside the top 10 — men’s swim and dive (No. 7), men’s tennis (No. 7), women’s cross country (No. 8), women’s basketball (No. 9), wrestling (No. 9) and women’s swim and dive (No. 10).

In addition to the top-10 finishes, women’s basketball and wrestling both earned co-ACC regular season championships, while men’s soccer made it to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 for the first time since 1994. Men’s tennis’ No. 7 ranking was the program’s best-ever end of season ranking in program history.

The Learfield Director’s Cup examines a school’s overall athletic success, taking performances from 19 of its athletics programs. Men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, volleyball and baseball must be five of the 19 programs for every university to be eligible for the competition.

“It was a tough choice because I really did like all three schools, but what separated NC State was Coach Tujague,” Brede told TheWolfpacker.com. “Not only does he develop but he is a good person who you can tell truly cares about his players. Even people outside the program had nothing but good things to say about him.”
