NC State TE Trent Pennix agrees to UDFA contract with Indianapolis Colts
NC State tight end Trent Pennix agreed to a UDFA contract with the Indianapolis Colts, the Wolfpack announced Saturday evening.
Pennix, a six-year player at NC State, worked out at the Wolfpack’s pro day as both a tight end and running back to show his versatility. He previously played as a running back at NC State before transitioning to tight end.
The Raleigh, N.C., native caught 15 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns this past season with the Pack. He also added two carries for 67 yards and a score with a long of 60 yards in the Pop-Tarts Bowl against Kansas State.
Pennix caught 54 passes for 702 yards and 11 touchdowns during his time at NC State. He finished with 41 carries for 240 yards and one rushing score as well.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pound tight end had a career-best 99 yards and two touchdowns on just three receptions in the Wolfpack’s 48-41 win over Marshall on Oct. 7. He also had two receptions for 38 yards and another score at Virginia Tech on Nov. 18.
“He has a very unique skill set, not Travis Kelce, I’ll tell you that,” NC State offensive coordinator Robert Anae said of Pennix after the Marshall victory. “It was great to see some of the drawings actually get connected in a real game. They’ve always been there, we just haven’t connected with it.”
Pennix is the third Wolfpack player to line up a UDFA contract, joined by long snapper Joe Shimko and defensive end Savion Jackson. NC State also had a pair of draft picks, linebacker Payton Wilson (third round to the Pittsburgh Steelers) and center Dylan McMahon (sixth round to the Philadelphia Eagles).
