NC State coach Dave Doeren doesn’t take issuing the Wolfpack’s No. 1 jersey lightly. The single digit is the only one that players aren’t allowed to select from the equipment room, rather the Pack’s 13th-year coach has the honor of choosing who gets to don the uniform. It’s a tradition that Doeren started ahead of the 2014 campaign, his second season in Raleigh. Instead of allowing any player to choose the number, it is awarded to someone that "exhibits an elite work ethic in practice and training habits, while also leading his teammates.” Now, with defensive end Davin Vann out of eligibility after wearing the No. 1 jersey for the last two seasons, it’s up to Doeren to choose a successor. He has a few veteran options that fit the criteria going into the 2025 campaign, which could make his decision tougher than in the past.  “This player doesn't just uphold the standards," Doeren previously said of the prestigious jersey. "He pushes them higher.”
