NCAA Résumé Watch: NC State rises in NET rankings after Clemson win

Finally. NC State had not been able to get over the hump in Quad 1 opportunities this season, but in its seventh try, it secured the ever-elusive victory with a 1-point win at Clemson on Saturday night. The Wolfpack had not been able to close out tight games in the previous two tries, but it learned from those experiences to gain the important victory over the Tigers.

NC State’s NET ranking improved by nearly 10 spots after the victory. The Pack rose from No. 83 to No. 75 after the upset road win. NC State has hovered around 80th in the NET for the past few weeks through its up-an-down play in a stretch where it had lost five of its last seven games. But now, it is on the upward swing.

The Pack has six games left to build an at-large résumé, and half of them are Quad 1 contests. NC State can try to build off of its Quad 1 win at Clemson to impress the selection committee, and this final stretch will be critical for the team’s at-large hopes. Here’s a look at NC State’s team sheet at this moment (and we will have a new update to this each week until Selection Sunday).

Team sheet notes

– Most of NC State’s non-conference schedule remains Quad 4 wins. The Wolfpack’s eight non-ACC wins all fall in that category, which does not help its NCAA Tournament résumé, other than the fact NC State avoided any painful losses in that stretch.

– The Wolfpack needs more Quad 1 wins to be able to feel comfortable about its standing for a chance for an at-large selection into the NCAA Tournament. So far, it has one but it could gain two more if Wake Forest and Virginia can break into the top-30. Both teams fell since last week’s update, but are 40th and 41st, respectively. If they can move up into the Quad 1 territory, that would do wonders for NC State’s own NET ranking, as well as its résumé.

– Though NC State beat Clemson, it needs to continue to add quality wins down the stretch. It likely only has room for one more loss this regular season to avoid being on the bubble, and that defeat realistically can only come at the hands of either North Carolina or Duke. Kevin Keatts’ squad does not have a lot of room for error and it needs to take care of business this week against a pair of Quad 3 opponents at home, Syracuse (Tuesday night) and Boston College (Saturday afternoon).
