No. 16 NC State’s series finale at No. 4 UNC rained out

CHAPEL HILL — After No. 4 North Carolina and No. 16 NC State split the first two games of the series earlier in the week, Sunday’s much-anticipated rubber match was rained out due to poor field conditions following a more than four hour delay. The game will not be rescheduled.
The Wolfpack entered the weekend looking to improve its NCAA Tournament resume in a rivalry series. NC State, which dropped Thursday night’s opener 8-1 before winning 8-5 on Friday, was able to do that as it jumped to No. 26 in the RPI to continue its quest to host.
Elliott Avent, the Pack’s 29th-year skipper, believed that his team had done enough to warrant a top-16 seed, even though the opportunity to earn its second top-five series victory in the last month was washed away.
“I think we should be hosting,” Avent said Friday. “I think we’ll have five or six teams in the ACC hosting in the NCAAs and I think we’ll be one of those teams, but we’ve got a long way to go.”

NC State’s 12-3 showing in April, including series wins over Virginia, then-No. 14 Louisville, then-No. 2 Clemson and at Cal helped put the Wolfpack within striking distance for a national seed. The program surged through the RPI rankings in the process, going from No. 234 to inside the top-30.
With the series finale cancellation at UNC, NC State remains a half game ahead of the Tar Heels going into the last weekend of the regular season. The Pack has a chance to sit in first place by the end of Sunday should Florida State lose to Cal.
NC State will be back in action to close the regular season with a three-game series against Stanford at Doak Field, beginning on Thursday night.
