Reactions to trades of former NC State stars Bradley Chubb and Nyheim Hines
Two former NC State star football players were at the center of frequent trade rumors throughout the past couple of weeks. As the NFL’s trade deadline passed Tuesday afternoon, both Bradley Chubb and Nyheim Hines found new professional homes.
Both of the deals led to plenty of reactions from the both the media and the athletes’ new teammates earlier today. Here are the highlights.
Bradley Chubb heads to Florida
The Miami Dolphins acquired Chubb, one of the top edge rushers in the NFL, for running back Chase Edmonds, a 2023 first-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick. Soon after the deal was agreed to in principle, the team sent a jet to pick up the former NC State All-American defensive end turned NFL linebacker.
As soon as the news broke, media members began touting the deal as a trade that could elevate the Dolphins into a Super Bowl contender.
If history is any indicator, ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky might be right, as both Von Miller and Emmanuel Sanders were traded from the Broncos at the trade deadline, and their new teams both made Super Bowl appearances.
ESPN’s Seth Walder gave the trade a B+ grade.
“Chubb’s play has been different this season,” Walder wrote. “His pass rush win rate at edge ranks third in the NFL behind only Micah Parsons and Myles Garrett, and Chubb has 5.5 sacks in eight games. His run stop win rate at edge (30%) is also a career high, putting him 12th in the category at the position.”
Dolphins general manager Chris Grier discussed the trade earlier today and mentioned that the team plans on signing the former Bronko Nagurski Award winner to a long-term contract.
The Ringer’s Steven Ruiz shared why this trade made Miami one of the winners of this year’s deadline.
“The addition of Chubb, who’s notched 5.5 sacks in eight games this season, will allow defensive coordinator Josh Boyer to dial back on the blitzes and play safer coverages in the secondary,” Ruiz wrote. “Chubb will line up across from second-year end Jaelan Phillips, giving Miami two edge rushers who rank in the top 20 in the NFL in pressures.”

The All-American edge rusher spoke to the media about the trade as he left the Broncos’ facility.
Nyheim Hines receives a change of scenery
Hines was the center of trade rumors for a while before the deal to Buffalo came to fruition. He recently discussed the instability at quarterback he played with during his time with the Colts. He will certainly have a consistent teammate under center with the Bills.
Upon his departure, the former do-it-all NC State running back made sure to thank Colts fans for his five years in Indianapolis. He racked up has 1,205 career rushing yards and 17 total touchdowns during his time there.
Former Colts punter Pat McAfee had a great reaction to the trade and was effusive in his praise of hte running back (warning: explicit language).
Katherine Fitzgerald, a beat reporter for The Buffalo News’, shared an early of Hines, who starred both running and catching the ball in Raleigh, from quarterback Josh Allen.
ESPN’s Walder gave Buffalo a B for this trade.
“Hines, 25, is a receiving back but not elite at it,” he wrote. “Over the last three years, Hines’ YAC Score is just a 47 — meaning he falls just shy of YAC expectations on average given the situation at the time of reception — though he has good hands, with a 76 Catch Score in that span.”
At NC State, Hines finished his career with 1,400 rushing yards and 933 receiving yards, while also taking 2 kickoffs and 1 punt back for touchdowns
