No player has transferred directly from North Carolina to NC State (or vice versa) since World War II — until now.

UNC transfer forward Ven-Allen Lubin pledged to NC State on Sunday afternoon, becoming the first known player to make the move directly from Chapel Hill to Raleigh. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

Lubin joins a small group of men’s basketball players to have donned both uniforms, including Bernie Mock, Fred Swartzberg, Bones McKinney, and most recently, Dontrez Styles. Styles, who played for the Pack last season, started his career at UNC before going to Georgetown and eventually NC State.

Now, Lubin is a unique character within the NC State-UNC rivalry.

The 6-foot-8, 230-pound post player averaged 8.7 points with 5.5 rebounds on 68.4 percent shooting last season with the Tar Heels. He finished the 2024-25 season on a high note with 11 double-figure scoring efforts, including 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting (to go with 10 rebounds) in a 3-point loss to Duke in the ACC Tournament semifinals

Before his tenure at UNC, the No. 65 player in the Class of 2022, spent one season at Notre Dame and one year at Vanderbilt.

“Ven-Allen is a positionless basketball player,” former Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said of Lubin after he signed with the Irish. “He has the ability to post up, face up, run and change ends. He also brings great length on the defensive end

NC State has one scholarship available for the 2025-26 campaign. Lubin joins Houston guard Terrance Arceneaux, McNeese guards Alyn Breed and Quadir Copeland, Michigan State guard Tre Holloman, Texas Tech forward Darrion Williams, Florida State forward Jerry Deng and Butler forward Colt Langdon as the Wolfpack’s portal pickups of the offseason.

The Pack also garnered a commitment from Tampa (Fla.) Sagemont Prep four-star guard Matt Able and Congolese freshman center Paul Mbiya, while it retained Arden (N.C.) Christ School four-star forward Mikey Wilkins. Additionally, sophomore guard Paul McNeil Jr. is the only returning scholarship player from last year’s squad.
