The 23rd annual Bill Dooley Pigskin Preview gave local fans of area colleges a chance to hear from the various coaches Friday at the Hilton Raleigh North Hills hotel.

NC State coach Dave Doeren, who is entering his 13th season, was able to answer six questions from host David Glenn. Two Wolfpack helmets with Doeren’s autograph on them were auctioned off for $2,500 in raising scholarship money.

Doeren talked about one of his favorite ex-Kansas City Chiefs players growing up, the reaction of his mother when he elected to go into coaching instead of the medical field and how he is navigating the new world of paying players and NCAA financial changes.

Doeren capped the event with how he is glad to have a returning starting quarterback in sophomore C.J. Bailey, and what his thoughts are for the upcoming season.

Doeren was joined by Duke coach Manny Diaz, North Carolina Central coach Trei Oliver, East Carolina offensive coordinator John David Baker and North Carolina new coach Bill Belichick. The event was the first public appearance together for Doeren and Belichick since the latter was hired.

The five coaches answered question about their earliest childhood football memories, the financial changes in college football, what led them to go into coaching, quarterback position, what needs to go well this upcoming season.

East Carolina coach Blake Harrell missed the event due to American Conference media day in Charlotte occurring Friday. NC State and East Carolina open the season Aug. 28 at Carter-Finley Stadium, and the Wolfpack hold their first practice July 30. NCSU will have five post-practice availabilities leading up to game week.

Former Apex (N.C.) Apex-Friendship running back Jaden Avery was awarded $10,000 in scholarship money for his college career at Charlotte. Avery rushed 307 times for 2,013 yard and 23 touchdowns last year, but was diagnosed with a spinal condition that could cause paralysis.

The 2026 Pigskin Preview will take place July 24, 2026.
