Why NC State expects to have an 'aggressive' Darrion Williams against No. 19 Kansas

Darrion Williams opened his NC State career as advertised. He flirted with a double-double in his Wolfpack debut with 19 points and eight assists before breaking through two games later as he poured in 32 points and 10 rebounds against UNCG. The Texas Tech transfer followed that impressive performance, which featured six made 3-pointers, with 28 points and seven boards against a quality VCU squad. It marked the first such time he turned in back-to-back 25-plus-point performances and things seemed to be on the up and up. But once the Wolfpack returned from the Maui Invitational, where it went 1-2 with a pair of losses to Seton Hall and Texas, Williams didn’t seem like the same player as before. His average shots per game dwindled from 12.1 in the first seven games to just 8.6 over the last three, scoring less than 10 points in each of his past two showings. As it turned out, Williams has been dealing with a nagging shoulder injury that he sustained during NC State’s trek to the middle of the Pacific Ocean to play on Hawaii’s second-largest island. Wolfpack coach Will Wade noted Williams’ season-low 19 minutes in the 85-45 win over Liberty on Wednesday night, a game in which he scored 9 points with eight rebounds on 3-of-9 shooting, was intentional with the team’s clash against No. 19 Kansas on Saturday evening at the Lenovo Center (5:30 p.m., ESPN) looming.
