Three days after being officially introduced as Nebraska’s 31st head football coach, Matt Rhule announced the additions of six coaches to his new staff on Thursday.

The Huskers granted Rhule a staff pool of $7 million for 10 full-time hires, along with his strength and conditioning coach.

“This group of coaches will be great representatives of the University of Nebraska and are ready to play a key role in building our program,” Rhule said in a statement. “These are high-energy men with great passion for coaching and teaching, who have a history of developing outstanding college players and preparing them for the next level.

“This is a group that will relate well to prospective student-athletes from all parts of the country and sell Nebraska Football.”

Marcus Satterfield, Offensive Coordinator

Rhule’s first reported hire at Nebraska, Satterfield was with Rhule at Temple (2013-2015), Baylor (2018-2019), and in the NFL at Carolina (2020).

He was Rhule’s offensive coordinator at Temple. He’s coached quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, and offensive lines at his different stops, so he’s also a versatile position coach.

At South Carolina, he was the Gamecocks’ play-caller for the last two seasons. Satterfield made $900,000 in 2022.

Rhule initially hired Satterfield at Baylor to serve as his director of recruiting in 2018. He was promoted to tight ends coach in 2019. Satterfield followed Rhule to the Panthers, where he served as an assistant offensive line coach for a season.

The last two games of the 2022 season featured high marks for the Gamecock football offense. They racked up a 63-point explosion at home against Tennessee, followed by an upset win on the road over Clemson.

Against the Tigers, South Carolina amassed 414 total yards of offense and scored 31 points in the rivalry win.

Ed Foley, Special Teams

Foley was an assistant head coach/special teams coordinator/tight ends coach under Rhule at Temple from 2013-16. He followed Rhule to Baylor as an offensive analyst in 2019 and then spent the past three years with Rhule and the Panthers as an assistant special teams coach.

When Rhule left Temple for Baylor in 2016, Foley was the interim head coach. He also served as the Owls’ interim head coach in 2018.

E.J. Barthel, Running Backs

After spending this past year in Connecticut under Jim Mora Jr., Barthel helped the Huskies improve the play of its running backs this season. The group averaged 4.80 yards per carry in 2022 after getting 3.18 ypc a year ago.

Before that, he worked under Rhule at Carolina as an offensive assistant for two seasons in 2020 and 2021. In his one season on the staff at Penn State in 2017, Barthel helped land a top-six recruiting class.

Terrance Knighton, Defensive Line

Knighton worked under Rhule with the Carolina Panthers as an assistant defensive line coach. A third-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, he brings eight years of NFL playing experience to the Huskers.

Rhule was an assistant coach at Temple when Knighton played for the Owls. He coached at Wagner for two seasons before joining Rhule in Carolina in 2021.

As a player in the NFL, Knighton played for Jacksonville, Denver, Washington, and New England. As a rookie with the Jaguars in 2009, multiple publications named him to the NFL’s All-Rookie team.

 Evan Cooper, Secondary

Cooper has served as a cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator for Rhule at Temple, Baylor, and Carolina. He played for the Owls while Rhule was an assistant coach and has coached on Rhule’s staffs for the past decade.

Cooper was also the Panthers’ director of player evaluation for three seasons after serving as director of player personnel at Baylor and Temple and an assistant director of player personnel at Miami. As Baylor’s recruiting coordinator in 2019, he helped the Bears land a top-35 class

Corey Campbell, Strength and Conditioning

Campbell served as the Panthers’ assistant strength coach for the last two seasons. The former Georgia Bulldog has also had stops at Cincinnati (2016), Purdue (2017), and Baylor (2017-2021).

He’s carried the titles of assistant strength coach, assistant director of athletic performance, and director of athletic performance.
