Nebraska made their fourth transfer portal offer of the 2023 cycle on Monday. However, this one seems to have more meaning.

NU head coach Matt Rhule offered Iowa and former Bellevue (Neb.) West wide receiver Keagan Johnson. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Johnson is the son of former Husker wide receiver Clester Johnson. Out of high school, he picked Iowa over Nebraska, but his entry into the transfer portal has given NU another chance. In just a few hours, Johnson has already received portal scholarship offers from NU, Notre Dame and Kansas State. He tweeted all three offers publicly before eventually deleting them.

Johnson’s older brothers played wide receiver at Wyoming (C.J. Johnson) and South Dakota State (Cade Johnson), and were not offered scholarships by the Huskers out of high school. Cade Johnson went out to be one of the top receivers in the country in the FCS ranks for the Jackrabbits.

The former four-star recruit Keagan Johnson appeared in just two games this past season and 11 games overall, totaling 20 catches for 363 yards and two touchdowns. By the end of the 2021 season, Johnson was regarded as one of the top promising young players in the league. He was named a finalist for Big Ten freshman of the year with Wisconsin running back Braelon Allen and Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud.

A nagging injury changed Johnson’s path at Iowa in 2022

Everything was set up for Johnson to be one of the centerpieces of Iowa’s offense this past season.

However, a soft tissue injury held him out of all but two games. The injury kept him sidelined for most of spring practice, summer conditioning and fall camp for the Hawkeyes.

He made his 2022 debut vs. Nevada in Week 3, but reaggravated the injury. He came back and played limited snaps vs. Nebraska on Week 13.

As a senior in 2020 at Bellevue West, Johnson totaled 1,337 all-purpose yards and 17 touchdowns in seven games. He was a unanimous all-state selection.
