Notre Dame badly needs a win Friday night against Marist, because it might be its best chance at a win for quite a while.

After hosting the Red Foxes, the Irish have eight days off before their next game: No. 22 Virginia, also at home. They face NC State on Jan. 3 before a tilt with No. 21 Duke on Jan. 6, and at the moment, Notre Dame is not built to play against the top dogs of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Irish are in the midst of a 3-game losing streak, with the most recent defeat being a humiliating 65-45 home loss to The Citadel on Tuesday.

Don’t just take my word for it. Notre Dame head coach Micah Shrewsberry agrees.

“That’s who this team has been,” Shrewsberry said after the game. “Our emotional intelligence is not very good. We don’t handle failure well at all. When failure happens, we collapse. That’s on me as a coach. I gotta find a way for us to be better.”

Entering practice Wednesday, Shrewsberry made his feelings about about the Marist game clear.

“I don’t care about this game on Friday,” Shrewsberry said. “I can tell you that right now. This is about our team getting better.”

Notre Dame vs. Marist game information

Matchup notables

• Marist plays in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The Red Foxes are off to a strong start to the season at 7-2 (2-0 MAAC), but they haven’t faced a high-major team yet. Their losses were at the hands of Binghamton and New Hampshire, both on the road.

• Marist is No. 199 out of 362 Division I teams in Kenpom. Notre Dame is No. 226. The Red Fox’ top scorers are sophomore center Max Allen II — a San Jose State transfer — and freshman guard Josh Pascarelli, who average 12.2 and 10.4 points per game, respectively.

• The only Notre Dame player to show up against The Citadel was junior guard J.R. Konieczny, who played his tail off on a night when most of his teammates did not. He scored 18 points, bringing his season average to double digits, and brought in 10 rebounds.

“J.R. is doing really good stuff,” Shrewsberry said. “He’s playing really hard. … Everybody else who started is sitting on the sideline and he’s playing with four walk-ons. But I appreciate his effort. He’s coming every single day and competing and fighting. And that’s all you can ask for from me.”
