Newsstand: Two Notre Dame players begin pre-draft showcase Wednesday
The NBA predraft process will take two Notre Dame players to Virginia this week. Guard Dane Goodwin and forward Nate Laszewski will play in the Portsmouth Invitational, a showcase for college basketball seniors, beginning Wednesday and running through Saturday.
Goodwin is playing for Norfolk Sports Club in the tournament, while Laszewski is on Portsmouth Partnership. Both will play in their first game on Wednesday. Games are not televised.
Both players were fifth-year seniors in 2022-23 and had the option of playing five full years of college basketball because of the COVID-19 bonus season. Goodwin announced he would return within a couple weeks of Notre Dame’s 2021-22 season ending in the NCAA Tournament. Laszewski tested the NBA Draft process and announced his return with less than an hour to go until the June 1 deadline.
Laszewski led Notre Dame in scoring (13.7 points per game) and rebounding (7.2 per game) this season. He shot 50.9 percent from the field, 39.2 percent on 3-pointers and 84.7 percent from the foul line. Goodwin was the Irish’s third-leading scorer, at 11.3 points per game. His 5.1 rebounds per game were second. He shot 43.5 percent overall and 38.8 percent from 3-point range.
Neither player is a projected draft selection. One player who participated in the 2022 Portsmouth Invitational was drafted: UConn forward Tyrese Martin, the No. 51 pick.
